Sadiqabad boat accident: 24 people remain missing, 26 bodies recovered

SADIQABAD: At least four more bodies have been recovered from the Indus River, two days after a boat carrying a wedding party of 96 tragically drowned on July 18.

At least 26 bodies have been taken out of the river so far but rescuers estimate that 96 people were on the boat.

On July 18, a boat carrying mostly women and children set out on the Indus River to attend a wedding, the boat capsized, plunging 96 people into the river near Machchka in the Sadiqbad. Initial rescue efforts by the people in the vicinity saved 46 people but at least 50 remained missing.

Two days later, at least 26 bodies have been recovered. The victims so far include 24 women and two children, according to the assistant commissioner. One body was recovered last night while the bodies of three women floated to the surface and rescue authorities were able to take them out early in the morning today (July 20), according to ASI Mohammad Saleem.

The funeral prayers of 21 people have been offered so far. The search and rescue mission will continue today for the 24 people who remain missing.
