Finance ministry spox receives flak for chewing ‘nuts’ on TV show

Many social media users took to Twitter on Friday night to criticise finance ministry spokesperson Muzzammil Aslam for chewing “nuts” during a live TV show, analysing the government official’s nature on a day when the country witnessed some uncertain and tragic incidents.

In a clip, which has been making rounds on Twitter, from Geo TV programme ‘Naya Pakistan’ the spokesperson could be seen munching something while hearing a question from the host Shahzad Iqbal. The host was discussing the country’s prevailing economic situation and soaring inflation with Aslam and another expert Ashfaq Tola.

Sharing the clip, journalist Amber Shamsi termed the moment as the “dinner” portion of the day. She also shared screenshots of Pakistan Embassy Serbia tweet criticising the government and Prime Minister Imran Khan over soaring inflation in the morning and a man taking a selfie at the backdrop of torched Sri Lankan factory manager in Sialkot over blasphemy allegations.

“Pakistan: a tragicomedy in one day,” Shamsi wrote, adding that the day culminated in the finance ministry spokesperson chewing what appears to be some nuts in a live television programme about the country’s economic blowout.

Reacting to the journalist’s tweet, social media users jumped in with unique responses on the spokesperson's nature.

One of the users in a sarcastic way sided Aslam, saying that when journalists allow former judge’s son to have “apple juice” during a live TV show why not him.

Another user said: “Our economy is in safe hands.”

But, Zia countered Shamsi and said that probably its not dinner rather than some “tiny dry fruit”.

“Cartoons everywhere on the TV these days,” said another user.

However, the finance ministry also responded to the rising clamour, saying: “You can have tea at live show, but you can't eat anything.”
