Punjab Assembly backs including Khatm-i-Nabuwat oath in nikahnama

The Punjab Assembly in its session on Tuesday adopted a resolution to include the Khatm-i-Nabuwat in the marriage documents reported Dawn.

The Khatm-i-Nabuwat is a declaration of a person's faith in the Prophet (peace be upon him) as being the last one in Islam and anyone claiming otherwise is considered a non-Muslim.

The newspaper said Speaker Chaudhry Parvez Elahi did not review other items on the agenda including a debate on the rising inflation.

The session was requisitioned by the opposition and began two hours late, reported Dawn.

The paper said a public-interest resolution on the inclusion of Khatm-i-Nabuwat was taken out of turn and adopted unanimously.

The speaker then put off the rest of the agenda until the following day.

In 2017, the Khatm-i-Nabuwat was added to the Elections Act, 2017 where a voter had to sign a declaration of faith before exercising their vote.

Opposition protests

PML-N leaders protested inflation and rising prices of electricity, edibles outside the assembly building. They came with placards in their hands and raised slogans, including “cheeni choro ata choro, jaan chhoro” (sugar thieves, flour thieves, spare us), said Dawn.

PML-N Punjab spokesperson Azma Bukhari said inflation had broken the back bone of the masses, alleging the government was running the country on the IMF’s dictations.

MPA Hina Parvez Butt shared an image from the protests on her social media account.
