Maryam's "extension" comments stir up a storm on social media

PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz's comments on Thursday regarding her party's support for Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Bajwa's extension and that she did not participate in the "sin" has stirred up controversy on social media.

Maryam was speaking outside Islamabad High Court after her hearing on the Avenfield case when she was asked whether her party would support the extension of NAB chairman like it had supported the extension of Gen Bajwa.

She said she'd comment on the NAB chairman Justice Javed Iqbal's extension when the issue is brought up on an official level adding that on any extension neither her party or "I am not involved in that sin."

Her distancing herself from the PML-N's decision to support Gen Bajwa's extension last year also added to the rumor mill regarding a split within the party.

Someone cleverly quipped that perhaps Maryam needs to create her own faction of the PML.

While others took the opportunity to poke fun at Maryam's attempt to distance herself from the party's support of Bajwa's extension.

One user said her comment is one of convenience.

While others shared clips from PML-N leaders like Khwaja Asif saying that Nawaz Sharif had approved the decision to support Bajwa's extension, saying Maryam can't get away with dumping the decision on her uncle Shehbaz Sharif.

Maryam herself tweeted on Thursday that she didn't say she wasn't in "that PML-N" but said everything else in the story was true.

This is not the first time Maryam has been critical of the army chief though she has not been direct in her attacks on him. In July, she tweeted two images of meetings between her father and Gen Bajwa and Afghanistan NSA Hamdullah Mohib who had earlier said derogatory comments about Pakistan.

Then too she received a lot of flak for the comparison.
