Police say Zahir Jaffer has confessed to murdering Noor

Zahir Jaffer, who is accused of killing Noor Mukadam on July 19, has confessed to committing the crime according to a story in Dawn which quotes police officer on the investigation team.

“A statement of Zahir Jaffer is being recorded and he will also be produced before a magistrate to record his statement under CrPC 164,” he is quoted by Dawn as saying on Monday late night.

The law states that a confession under the aforementioned section must be made before a magistrate because a confession in police custody does not count.

The same story quotes police sources as saying they have found the CCTV footage of the neighborhood which shows Mukaddam jumping from the first storey of the house and going towards the gate. It also shows her locking herself up in the guard's room from where Jaffer grabs her and takes her back to the house.

Jaffer remand extended by two days

The prosecution asked the court to extend Jaffer's physical remand by a week but were only granted two days. The police on Monday said it was still looking for his and Noor's mobile phones.

However on Tuesday, Geo reported the police as saying they had recovered his phone.

Jaffer's parents are in remand and should be produced in court today.

Jaffer meets with US embassy staff

Dawn also reported on a meeting between Jaffer and US embassy staff in a senior police officer's home. They are said to have met the accused in the presence of Pakistani police officers first as then in their absence. US embassy spokesperson did not comment on the issue and neither did the Pakistani police.
