Shahbaz Sharif appears before FIA in sugar scandal probe

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and opposition leader in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif on Tuesday appeared before the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) ​​in Lahore.

Earlier on June 15, the FIA's Anti-Corruption Circle issued a notice to the PML-N president, asking him to appear in person before its investigation team on June 22 and also bring relevant documents with him.

The notice further said that Shahbaz had to answer questions about peons and other low-grade employees of the Al-Arabia Sugar Mills and Ramzan Sugar Mills receiving Rs25 billion.

PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif left his residence in Model Town at 10.30 am for the FIA ​​investigation. Security was beefed up outside the FIA offices prior to Shahbaz's appearance. A large crowd of PML-N supporters gathered outside the building.

A five-member FIA team, led by Director FIA Punjab Zone-1 Dr Rizwan, questioned him for an hour.

According to the FIA, Shehbaz and his family members laundered money using 20 bank accounts of peons, clerks, cashiers and warehouse managers employed in the sugar mills.

A five-member team led by FIA Punjab Zone Director Dr Rizwan is investigating the Ramzan Sugar Mills and Al Arabiya Sugar Mills scandal.
