A celebrity version of American series ‘The Traitors’ is coming to the BBC in 2025.

Sources close to the production have confirmed that an agreement between Studio Lambert, the show’s producer, and the BBC is nearing completion.

The plan is to film the first celebrity edition next year, with a tentative air date sometime later in 2025. This would follow the broadcast of three seasons of the “civilian” version of the show.

Claudia Winkleman, who has hosted the UK version of “The Traitors” since its debut, is expected to return as the host for the celebrity edition.

The original format of “The Traitors” features contestants living together and participating in challenges while trying to identify the “traitors” among them. The UK and US versions of the show are filmed back-to-back in a Scottish castle, offering the possibility of filming the celebrity version before or after these regular seasons.

Given the popularity of “The Traitors” and the abundance of big-name fans, the BBC reportedly has high ambitions for the caliber of celebrities they hope to attract. A recent promo video featuring Courteney Cox sparked speculation about her potential involvement in the celebrity edition. Additionally, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, and Mary Berry all participated in a “Celebrity Traitors” sketch for Comic Relief last year.

In the UK, “The Traitors” has been a ratings juggernaut for the BBC. The season two finale was the most-watched show on UK television during its broadcast week. Applications to be on the “civilian” version of the show have skyrocketed, from a few thousand for the first season to 40,000 for season 2, and a reported near-300,000 for season 3, which is set to begin filming soon.

“The Traitors,” created by Dutch production company IDTV and distributed internationally by All3Media International, was the format with the most new global sales in 2023, surpassing “The Masked Singer.” Numerous new versions are planned for 2024, with creator Marc Pos revealing a development deal with Banijay earlier today.
