Woman in Karachi raped on pretext of job

Claims she was sexually assaulted at gunpoint; says she faced difficulty while registering complaint

A woman, seeking employment, has allegedly been raped in Karachi on the pretext of a job. She has claimed that she was sexually assaulted at gunpoint and accused two men of the crime.

The alleged crime was committed on March 10, according to the first information report registered on her complaint at the Shahrah-e-Faisal police station.

The victim, 34, claimed that the alleged rapist had contacted her through Facebook a month ago. He maintained contact with her through WhatsApp and claimed that his father was a government officer and would get her a job.

In her complaint, the victim claimed that she was raped in a flat in the city’s Gulistan-e-Johar area. She added that the accused also had an accomplice who warned her that she would be killed if she shouted.

The FIR invoked sections 376 (punishment for rape) and 506/B (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

One of her applications dated March 12 states that she facing difficulties despite registration of the case.

“Despite my condition and providing evidence, the Shahrah-e-Faisal police station personnel hesitated to register the report,” it said and alleged that it was due to the influence of the prime suspect’s father.

“It is obvious that the suspect belongs to a prominent family and is linked to the Police Department,” she said.

The application stated that the suspect was getting full support from his family, adding that she and her family were being continuously pressured and harassed. “We are being forced to make a compromise and withdraw the complaint. We are also warned of serious consequences if the complaint is not withdrawn. This is continuing,” she said.

It added their complaint was registered late. “Such an incident has increased my concerns over seeking justice,” she said and added that injustice to her would be a bad precedent for middle-class women.

She claimed that no effort was being made to arrest the culprits, demanding the higher authorities to interfere in the matter to ensure that “justice was served without any discrimination, association with the institution or any pressure.”

She expressed hope that special measures would be taken to ensure her rights and the criminals were brought in court of law.
