Shehbaz takes oath as prime minister of Pakistan

Oath administered by President Arif Alvi

Shehbaz Sharif took oath as the 24th prime minister of Pakistan in a solemn ceremony held in the President House on Monday.

President Arif Alvi administered oath to the newly-elected PM. The ceremony was attended by members of Shahbaz’s family as well as major party leaders and members of the caretaker cabinet.

Nawaz Sharif, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Asif Zardari also attended the ceremony. The speaker of the National Assembly and chairman of senate were also present during the oath taking.

The chief ministers of Balochistan, Sindh and Punjab also attended the ceremony.

Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff General Sahir Shamshad were also present in the meeting.

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar sat on President Arif Alvi’s left side.

He was given a guard of honour upon arrival at the Prime Minister House in Islamabad.

Shehbaz was elected as PM after securing 201 votes in the National Assembly on Sunday. His opponent, Sunni Ittehad Council’s Omar Ayub Khan, received 92 votes.

The younger Sharif contested the election for PM as the joint candidate of a multi-party alliance that included Pakistan Peoples Party, Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Balochistan Awami Party and others.
