India hints at action after Google’s Gemini calls Modi a fascist

The chatbot had not answered the question similarly for Trump and Zelenskyy

Google’s artificial intelligence platform Gemini could face legal action from India after reportedly describeing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a ‘fascist’.

The controversy came to light after an Indian user posted screenshots of how Gemini’s chatbot had markedly different responses to questions about Modi, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and former US President Donald Trump.

The user had asked the chatbot if each of these leaders was a fascist.

In response to the Trump query, the bot said that ‘elections are a complex topic with fast-changing information.’

Similarly, for Zelenskyy, Gemini replied that the question was ‘complex and highly contested’ with ‘no clear answer’.

However, when it came to Modi, the AI model had the longest answer of the three. It mentioned that experts have described the Indian PM as fascist based on numerous factors including the Hindu supremacist ideology of the BJP.

The answer also mentioned violence against religious minorities in India.

The matter even elicited a response from Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India’s minister for technology, who hinted that legal action could be taken.

“These are direct violations of Rule 3(1)(b) of Intermediary Rules (IT rules) of the IT act and violations of several provisions of the Criminal code,” he wrote on X.

As the outrage grew, Google issued a statement saying that Gemini’s responses ’may not always be reliable, especially when it comes to responding to some prompts about current events, political topics or evolving news.“

Google further said that the issue has been resolved and the company is looking to improve things as they go along.
