Heavy rain hits parts of Karachi for second day

PMD says city's weather will remain cloudy with intermittent rain

Heavy rain was reported in parts of Karachi on Sunday as the Met Office forecasted that intermittent rain was expected in the city. Multiple roads were flooded after rain lashed Pakistan’s economic hub last night.

According to Aaj News, heavy downpours were reported in Gadap Town, Bahria Town, Nazimabad, M.A Jinnah Road and Gulshan-e-Maymar.

Meanwhile, electricity supply to several areas was suspended 18 hours after heavy rain first hit parts of the city.

As many as 50 feeders have been affected by the rainfall as Model Colony and Kazimabad witnessed a power shutdown for around 18 hours.

An official of K-Electric said that the power supply to low-laying areas was suspended due to water accumulation. The maintenance work will be done after the drainage of rainwater.

The PMD’s radar showed that the rainfall system from the northwest reached Karachi at around 9am and was moving towards the rest of the city.

The weather would remain cloudy, the Pakistan Meteorological Department said in a statement.

In the morning, 19.9 degrees Celsius was the temperature in the city.

Data from the Met office till 11pm showed that PAF Faisal Base received the highest amount of rainfall ie 75 millimetres, followed by Malir (64mm), Surjani Town (63.8mm), Keamari (55mm), Quaidabad (52mm), old airport area (51mm), Gulshan-i-Hadeed (50mm), PAF Masroor Base (47.2mm), Jinnah Terminal (42mm), Saadi Town (37.6mm), North Karachi (33.6mm), University Road (30mm), Gulshan-i-Maymar (23.8mm), Nazimabad (23.5mm), Korangi (15mm) with trace rainfall in Orangi Town and Defence Housing Authority.

According to Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab post on X in the early morning on Sunday, old city area, secretariat area, Tower and MA Jinnah Road still had water because of certain choking points.

It said that the government has deployed some machinery to clear disposal area at the Hijrat Colony but some more work would be required to be done in the morning.
