Khan seeks detailed verdict of cypher, state gifts cases

Former PM says the trial of two cases was against legal requirements

Former prime minister Imran Khan has sought detailed judgement on cypher and Toshakhana cases under which he was awarded 24 years in jail.

His petitions to the Islamabad High Court on Thursday stated that the trial of state gifts reference filed and the cypher case was against legal requirements.

He filed his applications through his lawyers Salman Safdar, Hamid Khan, and Barrister Ali Zafar to the high court.

An accountability court sentenced on Wednesday Khan and his Bushra Begum to 14 years in prison in the Toshakhana case, which accused them both of illegally selling state gifts. The judge also banned them both from holding political office for 10 years.

The decision came a day after a special court set up under the Official Secrets Act sentenced the former prime minister and his foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi to 10 years in prison for leaking state secrets.

The trial was conducted and concluded in the “most objectionable and condemnable manner, without affording the opportunity to the Defence Counsel to conduct cross-examination and an essential requirement under Article 134 of QSO, 1984,” Khan’s petitions stated.

They added that the trial had been conducted in an “unconstitutional manner” in brazen violation of Article 10-A of the Constitution, 1973.

“Through media, it has been learnt that Petitioner has been convicted and sentenced and is imprisoned without a Judgment in field. This only points towards illegal detention and violation of Fundamental Rights under the Constitution, 1973.”

He urged the court to supply copies of evidence, all interim orders, along with final judgement, if passed in the matter.
