The number of registered voters in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has increased by more than four million over the past five years, according to the data shared by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The data showed that the number of voters in KP was 17,839,845 in 2018 which rose to 21,928,119 as of December 13, 2023.

Pakistan, with a burgeoning middle class and young population, will open booths to more than 128 million voters on February 8.

The new government would have big tasks to take as the economy is still reeling after Islamabad came to the brink of default last year, militancy is on the rise with deaths in 2023 hitting a six-year high and climate change is ravaging the country by fueling more frequent droughts and floods.

Every political party in their rallies have urged people to exercise their right to vote. According to Gallup Pakistan, the voter turnout was highest in Punjab (56.8%) and lowest in KP (41.5%).

Moreover, the number of female voters surged to 9,983,772 from 7,619,742 while the number of male voters increased from 10,220,103 to 11,994,397 in KP.

It further showed that the total number of registered voters in Pakistan increased to 128,585,760, including 69,263,704 males and 59,322,056 females.

“The turnout in 2018 general elections was 51%; only half of Pakistan’s voter base came out to cast their votes,” Gallup’s August 21, 2023 statement said.

It added that voter turnout in Balochistan has increased steadily over the decades, whereas for all other provinces, there has been an overall decline.
