The Election Commission of Pakistan adjourned proceedings against Imran Khan, Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry in a contempt case till December 6 on Thursday.

Umar appeared in the ECP in person on Thursday, while Chaudhry and Khan could not be produced from jail for the hearing.

Chaudhry was represented by Faisal Chaudhry while Khan was represented by Shoaib Shaheen.

ECP Member Nisar Durrani said that the ministry of interior ha cited security concerns to say that Khan could not be produced in court but a jail trial was possible.

Shaheen replied that he had still not received a copy of the inerior ministry’s report and a trial in jail would portray a ‘bad impression’ of the trial.

Durrani ordered the ministry to provide Shaheen a copy of its report but took exception to Shaheen’s remarks about the impression, adding that the proceedings had to be dictated by law not optics.

The bench also said it would issue orders regarding Fawad Chaudhry’s appearance in the case.

Chided by the ECP for not appearing, Asad Umar said that he had been appearing most often and had even left politics at this point. The former PTI secretary general submitted a written response in the case.

The case will now be heard on December 6.
