A technical team of the International Monetary Fund arrived in Pakistan on Monday to discuss tax reforms with officials from the Federal Board Revenue.

The team met caretaker Finance Minister Shamshad Akhtar after their arrival. The talks with FBR officials are expected to last one week.

Measures for increasing revenue collection and broadening the tax net are expected to be among the main topics of discussion with the IMF team.

The two sides are expected to discuss changes to the tax policy in detail and the changes could be added to the budget in 2024.

The government hopes to add another million tax payers to the net, taking the total number of tax payers to six million.

The IMF team will also discuss the basic structure of a scheme to collect more taxes from the retail sector which has traditionally resisted attempts to be brought into the tax net.
