Indian actress Rashmika Mandanna on Monday raised her voice against the misuse of technology after a deepfake video of her was shared online.

“I feel really hurt to share this and have to talk about the deepfake video of me being spread online. Something like this is honestly, extremely scary not only for me, but also for each one of us who today is vulnerable to so much harm because of how technology is being misused,” she wrote on X.

A recent viral video took the internet by storm, featuring who seemed to be actor Mandanna entering an elevator. However, examination revealed it to be a deepfake – a digitally manipulated video.

In her post, she thanked her family, friends, and well-wishers who, according to her, were the actress’s protection and support system.

“But if this happened to me when I was in school or college, I genuinely can’t imagine how could I ever tackle this. We need to address this as a community and with urgency before more of us are affected by such identity theft,” she stated.

Veteran Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan also called for taking a legal action against the making of the deepfake video of Mandanna.

The digitally manipulated video garnered millions of views, with over 2.4 million views on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Deepfaking is a technology that involves using artificial intelligence, particularly deep learning algorithms, to manipulate or replace elements in video or audio content with other elements.

The technology uses neural networks to analyse and generate content. It is commonly employed for face swapping, where one person’s face is superimposed onto another person’s body in a video.
