PPP leader Murtaza Wahab was elected Karachi mayor unopposed, according to a notification issued by the returning officer on Friday.

The returning officer issued the revised form of election of the chairman of UC-08 Ibrahim Hyderi, Malir district.

In June this year, Wahab was elected as the first Pakistan Peoples Party mayor of Karachi after beating Jamaat-e-Islami’s Naeemur Rehman.

The PPP had formed an alliance with PML-N and JUI-F, which took their combined strength to 173 while the JI had the support of 61 PTI members that took the expected number of votes for Rehman to 192.

But Wahab secured all 173 expected votes and Rehman only managed to get 160 after 30 union council members abstained from the polling process.

On June 19, Wahab was sworn in as the city’s mayor.

“Grateful [for] the trust shown by Chairman Bilawal, President Zardari and Mrs Talpur on my capacity to lead to our great city. God willing, all PPP members, Salman and I will work together to serve the people of our city,” he had said in a post on X, erstwhile Twitter.
