Asian Games: Pakistan out of race for gold in cricket

Pakistan Shaheens were out of the race for a gold medal in the Asian Games Men’s Cricket Competition after being defeated by Afghanistan in the semi-final on Friday.

Chasing a target of 116, the Afghan side won the match by four wickets in-hand in the 18th over.

The Green Shirts will face Bangladesh for the bronze medal match tomorrow (Saturday) while Afghanistan take on India for the gold medal match.

Earlier, the Pakistan Shaheens batters failed to play the full quote of 20 overs as they were all-out on 115 runs in 18 overs against Afghanistan in the semi-final of the tournament.

The Green Shirts were put to bat first after Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bowl in the penultimate game for both teams.

Out of the batters, six failed to reach double-figures as Pakistan was bundled out on a below-par score by the Afghan bowling lineup.

Opening batter Omair Yousuf remained the top scorer having added 24 runs to the board for the Green Shirts. Allrounder Aamer Jamal scored 14 runs while Arafat Minhas managed to add 13 runs to the total.

For Afghanistan, Fareed Ahmad was the leading wicket-taker with three scalps as he conceded 15 runs in his three overs. Qais Ahmad and Zahir Khan took two wickets each.

Pakistan Shaheens reached the semi-final of after a comfortable victory against Hong Kong in the second quarter-final on October 3.

India has already qualified for the final after defeating Bangladesh by nine wickets in the first semi-final.

The final of the tournament will be played tomorrow (Saturday) while the third place play-off will be played between the defeated teams in the semi-finals on the same day.
