The residents of Sao Lorenco de Bairro in Portugal were astounded when a river of red wine began flowing through the streets of the small town, the New York Post reported.

The streets of the town turned blood red after millions of litres of wine flowed down from a steep hill in the town and gushed down the streets. Videos posted on social media show a seemingly endless river of wine flowing down the town’s lanes.

The 2.2 million litres of red wine originated from the Levira Distillery as tanks carrying millions of barrels unexpectedly burst and the red liquid came roaring down the streets on Sunday.

The spillover also raised an environmental alert as the river of wine was headed to an actual river nearby. The amount of spilt wine could fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

The wine also reportedly flooded a basement at a home near the distillery before it made its way to the rest of the town.

The fire department initiated a relief operation to stop the wine flood before it turned the Certima River into a river of wine, and the flood was made to flow into a nearby field and redirected.

Levira Distillery apologised for the bizarre incident and assured that it had cleared the wine-soaked land in the town. “We assume full responsibility for the costs associated with cleaning and repairing the damage, having teams do so immediately,” the distillery said in a statement.
