Ramiz Raja reacts to his meme on power consumers’ woes

Citizens protest across Pakistan against their inflated electricity bills

Former captain of Pakistan Cricket team and commentator Ramiz Raja reacted to a meme involving his pictures, on power consumers’ woes.

The meme made rounds on social media showing a combo of Raja’s pictures where on one hand he is pictured giving a pose for the camera with combed hair and the caption reads “Solar User”. On the other, he is pictured with disgruntled hair during the Pakistan-Afghanistan ODI series that concluded recently with the caption “WAPDA Users”.

Raja shared the picture from his account on X, writing: “Life is so much easier with a sense of humour!”

Social media highlighted the plight of power consumers in a humorous way amid countrywide protests against the inflated bills.

Traders, citizens and people from different sectors of life protested against the overbilling while in some instances they refused to pay the electricity bills and burned the bills in protest.

The protests and beating of distribution companies’ employees in some instances prompted the authorities to take precautionary measures as Peshawar Electric Supply Company directed its staff to remove all green number plates from its vehicles.

The power utility also asked for police protection for its seven sub-divisions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

On August 28, the officials of Lahore Electric Supply Company threw the consumers’ bills in front of their houses and shops and ran away in Pattoki city of Punjab’s Kasur district fearing a violent reaction from the consumers overhiked prices of electricity.

The former skipper of the green team has taken centre stage on social media on several occasions. The most recent was on August 7 when he stunned everyone with his singing talent.

Raja showed his skills with his reinterpretation of the famous Sri Lankan song ‘Manike Mage Hithe’ with its singer Yohani.

Raja was sacked in December last year just days after the national team suffered a humiliating Test series defeat at the hands of England.

Appointed by former prime minister Imran Khan in September 2021, he served as PCB chairman for 15 months.

He was the fourth former cricketer to be appointed to the post after Ijaz Butt (2008-11), Javed Burki (1994-95) and Abdul Hafeez Kardar (1972-77).
