All forces want immediate elections, says Sindh CM Murad

Reiterates elections will be held within two to three months after dissolution of assemblies
Exclusive interview of Murad Ali Shah - Faisla Aap Ka with Asma Shirazi - Aaj News

All forces want immediate elections after the dissolution of assemblies, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said on Tuesday. He reiterated elections would be held within two to three months after assemblies complete their stint.

“Elections will be held within two to three months [after the dissolution of assemblies],” he said on Aaj News show Faisla Aap Ka. “I think the country’s betterment lies in this and all democratic forces but I think all forces will want that elections are held as soon as possible and elected governments return.”

He was speaking in response to queries related to the dissolution of assemblies and the consultation process on the interim government setup.

Though the discussion on such questions started earlier this month, it was increased after Prime Minister said on Sunday that his government would hand over the power to an interim setup before the completion of its tenure in August. There were also reports that PPP and PML-N have decided to dissolve the National Assembly on August 8.

But Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb played down the reports, saying no decision had been made.

“PPP as a political party will never want delayed elections. Elections should be held within the constitutional time limit,” Sindh CM Murad said.

He added that a decision on the dissolution of assemblies would be made after consultation. The time for consultation on the caretaker government is three days as per the Constitution, he said and added that so far opposition leader in Sindh Haleem Adil Sheikh has not been in contact with him.

When asked if the PPP would be able to form the next government, he said no party would have a simple majority and there would be a coalition government. He was of the view that talks could be held with PTI if there was a change in their political thinking and democratic thinking.

On the show, the Sindh CM stressed the caretaker setup should be led by politicians. He was of the view that technocrats have never delivered. “If they [technocrats] come, their tenure should be kept short,” Murad said and added that it was need of the hour.“

He added that every party has stressed the need for timely elections.
