The construction of a road made of recycled plastic has been completed in Karachi in a bid to reduce pollution in the metropolitan.

More than 6,000 plastic weighing around 2.5 tonnes were successfully recycled for the construction of the 730 feet long and 60 feet wide road.

Project lead Zunair Bin Hasan said that the environment-friendly road was built completely using recycled plastic bottles.

“A plastic bottle can take approximately 300 years to decompose while a plastic bag can take up to 500 years to decompose. We built this road to reduce pollution in the city,” he added.

For him, the construction of the road from the plastic can be a use-case of recycling of plastic materials. The government and other departments can take forward the initiative of using recycled plastic, he said.

Experts are of the view that plastic roads have higher flexibility, durability, and an extended lifespan nearly three times longer than regular roads, he added.

Similarly, the construction expenses are also less for plastic roads as plastics can be obtained at minimal cost, compared with the materials for conventional roads which are more expensive.

The citizen commuting through the newly built road praised the initiative, saying that the road is clean and gives a feel of flexibility.
