The Election Commission of Pakistan sent out a security alert on Friday to its employees warning them about a possible ransomware attack.

The country’s electoral body feared the election and voter data could be stolen.

The ECP has told its employees that an unknown person is trying to steal the data from the commission’s officers.

The ransomware attack is being carried out through an email sent to the employees. The ECP has also attached a copy of the email in its alert.

ECP has asked officials to refrain from opening the email and advised that it be sent to spam folder.

The email is titled ‘Implementation of social media policy’ and contains a zip folder attachment named ‘cabinet’.

The email is attributed to Muhammad Shahid, PS to Director General. It also asks employees to submit a response to the matter highlighted by July 11.
