In a surprising turn of events ahead of Eid-ul-Adha, butchers in different cities have hiked their rates by more than 40%.

So, you’ve bought your sacrificial animal for Eid, but now it seems seeking the services of a butcher might cost you a fortune.

While Eid-ul-Adha is synonymous with sacrificial rituals and the butcher’s apron, the scarcity of skilled butchers has led to an unprecedented surge in their fees.

For those recovering from the post-purchase shock, the rates charged by butchers have left them feeling dizzy. Butchers, too, have made a meaty addition to their rates, surpassing a staggering 40 percent increase, especially in the federal capital of Islamabad.

Last year, the going rate for butchering a small animal was Rs5,000, which has now skyrocketed to Rs7,000, while the demand for processing larger animals has risen from Rs20,000 to a hefty Rs30,000.

Veteran and experienced butcher, Sunnat Ibrahim, is advising those in need of his skills to steer clear of novices. According to him, not every individual armed with a knife, apron, and a few tips can claim the title of a proficient butcher.

To avoid unnecessary distress, it’s best to stay away from seasonal butchers, he says.

As Eid-ul-Adha draws near, the humorous twist of soaring butcher prices has certainly added an unexpected element to the festivities. It seems that even the process of sacrifice has become a matter of financial calculation and witty negotiation for those partaking in this age-old tradition.

So, how much you end up paying depends on your negotiation skills. Islamabad being one of the most expensive cities offers you a yardstick.
