Interim Punjab government challenges PTI leader Yasmin Rashid’s acquittal

Says enough evidence against the PTI leader

The interim Punjab government has challenged the acquittal of PTI leader Yasmin Rashid in the Lahore High Court, claiming that the prosecution has strong evidence against her.

In its petition, the caretaker setup has claimed that they have strong witnesses against the PTI leader for her alleged involvement in the events of May 9.

The Lahore’s anti-terrorism court on June 3 discharged Rashid in a case pertaining to the Jinnah House (Core Commander House) attack and ordered her release. The court had rejected the police’s request to extend the physical remand of the former provincial health minister by 14 days.

The petitioner urged the court to declare Rashid’s release “void and null”.

On June 4, IGP of Punjab Usman Anwar said that the police would challenge the discharge order.

Earlier in a tweet, the Punjab police vowed to bring to justice all the “culprits” involved in damaging public and private properties during the violent protests.

Rashid was among the several PTI leaders arrested for the May 9 riots after PTI Chairman Imran Khan was arrested by the paramilitary forces from the court premises.

Violent protests broke out across the country after Khan’s arrest, where government and military installations were burned by violent protesters. Law enforcement agencies arrested hundreds of PTI workers while the top leadership of the party was also arrested in several cases.
