SC says it won’t interfere in economic matters

CJP adds old cases are being fixed to make sure there are no 'love issues'

Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial said that the Supreme Court would like to stay away from interfering in economic matters as it was not the court’s area of expertise.

Hearing a case related to the K-Electric’s privatisation, the chief justice said that the petitioner could approach the relevant high court for the issue.

THe chief jsutice also remarked that the government had passed two new laws regarding Article 184(3) of the constitution so old cases were being fixed infront of the court to see if any of them was a ‘live issue’.

When the petitioner asked for the case to be fixed for a hearing next week, the CJP replied that the court would begin its annual vacation from next week.

He then told the petitioner that they should get further restrictions and adjourned the case till Tuesday.

Formerly known as the Karachi Electric Supply Company, the organisation was rebranded to K-Electric in 2014 as it marked 100 years of operation. The company had already been privatised in 2005 when a company named KES Power took over the majority of its stakes.

KE’s website says it is the only company in Pakistan that has control over generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in its area of operation.
