The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has revoked the licenses of 25 doctors responsible for the death of five patients during treatment, while imposing heavy fines on dozens others.

The disciplinary committee of the PMDC gave verdict in a total of 85 pending cases against medical practitioners on Saturday.

The PMDC held thorough investigations on the citizens’ complaints regarding the negligence and incompetency of the medical practitioners while carrying out their duties.

After finding evidence of neglect while on duty, the regulatory body also suspended the medical licences of around 25 doctors and imposed heavy fines on them, while it also issued warning to 18 others.

PMDC is a statutory regulatory authority that maintains the official register of medical practitioners in Pakistan.

Its principal function is to establish uniform minimum standards of basic and higher qualifications in medicine and dentistry throughout Pakistan.

The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), a leading organisation of medical practitioners, has been demanding to make PMDC an autonomous, independent regulatory body for the improvement of medical education in Pakistan.
