Imran will write to CJP about his cases, threat to life

PTI supporters asked to stay in Zaman Park till 10pm today, second team from Lahore to replace them

PTI Chairman Imran Khan has decided to write a letter to the chief justice of Pakistan over dozens of cases registered against him and threats to his life.

“I am going to write a letter via my lawyers to the CJP. I am going to say about the fake cases against me and that my life is in danger,” he said while addressing supporters of the party on Sunday.

Imran was able to address the party workers despite being “unavailable” at the residence. The Islamabad police earlier in the day had left without arresting the PTI chief citing the said reason.

Supporters of the former ruling party had thronged Imran’s residence over fears that he would be arrested by the police. But, the police were still in the city and reports say that they have decided to take the former prime minister into custody “come what may”.

PTI leaders a couple of hours before the address told the media that tear gas and shelling had been brought by police with the aim to arrest Imran. They claimed that such attempts were made to further jeopardise the situation. They have also warned of countrywide “peaceful protests” if their leader was put behind bars.

Imran, who survived an attempt on his life in November last year, reiterated that he had earlier warned about the prediction of assassins. He has accused Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and an army man of orchestrating the attack on his life.

He quoted the foreign ministry on the threats to his life.

The Islamabad police, with the cooperation of Lahore police, had arrived to arrest Imran in the Toshakhana case. The district and sessions court issued arrest warrants for Imran in the Toshakhana Reference on February 28 after the accused failed to appear in front of the court.

“As many as 74 cases have been registered against me. I want a public hearing of the Toshakhana case so that people should know what he has done,” Imran said.

He slammed the ruling coalition government and the Pakistan Peoples Party for apparetly tottering the economy and leaving the poor class of society to bear the brunt of inflation.

The PTI chief claimed that former army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa helped Shehbaz Sharif become prime minister, who according to him cleared his corruption cases after coming to power.

He described the incumbent rulers as “thieves”. Imran reiterated that the many rulers of the incumbent government were named in billions of rupees of corruption.

He agreed with his party supporters that his party workers were kept “like animals” in jails.

“Put my name on the exit control list (ECL) as I am not afraid of leaving the country,” Imran said and accused the incumbent rulers of being fearful of getting their name in the ECL.

“From the first day, I said I would not accept them. If my nation did not rise against them there is no future. Around 800,000 people left the country in the past few months,” he said and wondered where the country was heading.
