American-Pakistani woman says in-laws tried to kill her in Jhelum

Victim's mother say in-laws assaulted daughter and deprived her of $7,000

JHELUM: An American citizen of Pakistan origin has alleged that she was beaten and robbed by her in-laws during a visit to their residence in the Sukha village of Jhelum in Punjab, Aaj News reported Monday.

The woman, who visited the police station shortly after the incident, told the superintendent of police (SP) for investigation that she married Sukha resident Shoaib around two years ago. The husband lived in the US on the spousal visa, and the coupla have one daughter.

However, due to domestic issues, the woman had her husband’s visa cancelled after which he returned to Pakistan. The husband has since relocated to the UAE where he is employed.

The woman came to Pakistan last moth. During her stay, she visited went to visit her in-laws residence in Sukha. She said that she had had a tense relationship with her in-laws after she had her husband’s visa cancelled.

It was at her in-laws that the alleged attack took place. The woman told the police that her in-laws tried to take away her daughter. She also accused the in-laws of depriving her of her iPhone and $7,000 that she had in her purse. They said the in-laws tried to set her clothes on fire in an attempt to burn her alive.

She told the police that she was only able to escape after calling her mother, who arrived with their drive and helped them escape.

The woman says that despite the registration of a case, the police had failed to arrest her in-laws who were still threatening her.

The police told Aaj News that the iPhone had been recovered from the scene of the incident. But they had not found the $7,000 that the woman said she was carrying in her bag and which were then stolen by her in-laws.
