The University of Karachi has started payment of salaries to teachers and non-teaching staff from Tuesday after which the teachers’ organization has announced that classes will resume from tomorrow i.e. Wednesday.

The Karachi University Teachers’ Society (KUTS) had announced a boycott of educational activities over non-payment of salaries from Friday. This led to the suspension of all academic activities at the university on Monday and Tuesday.

Around 1,000 teachers — including 650 permanent faculty and 400 visiting teachers — started the boycott on Friday to protest for their salaries. They were joined by over 2,000 non-teaching staff facing the same predicament.

“The Karachi University Teachers’ Society pays tribute to all the teachers who, through their unity, convinced all the authorities that the rights of the teachers will not be compromised,” the association said in a statement Tuesdya. “The payment of salaries has started and the boycott is being terminated as per the consent of the Board of Directors.”

Syed Faizan-ul-Hasan Naqvi, its secretary, told Aaj Digital that the boycotted ended on Tuesday and classes would resumed from the next day (Wednesday).

The University of Karachi, which generates Rs8 billion in revenue yearly, has not paid Rs350 million in monthly salaries, which includes a mere Rs150 million for teachers. But this is not the only failure that has angered the teachers. The university has also run up a Rs100 million backlog on payments to teachers for the evening program over the past one and a half years.
