Zulfikar Bhutto Jr gives democratic twist to popular PPP slogan at trans march

Bhutto family scion advises people to chant "Jiye awaam" instead of "Jiye Bhutto"

This weekend’s ‘Moorat March’ spearheaded by the city’s Khawaja Sira community was notable for many reasons , including it being the first such protest by members of the marginalized group. There were emotional speeches and emotive performances interspersed with chants and songs.

A lot of the moments from the march made it to social media, including one clip of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Jr, a scion of the popular Bhutto family, who attended the march.

During the speech, Zulfikar Jr said that people should stop using the slogan “Jiye Bhutto” (long live Bhutto). “Instead, you should chant “Jiye awaam” (long live the people), “jiye khawaja sira” (long live the trans community) and “jiye aurat” (long live woman).

The clip was shared widely on social media, with many lauding the young activist and social campaigner for espousing the democratic spirit.

“This is change. This is rising Sindh,” wrote journalist Mujahid Hussain Syed while sharing a snippet of Zulfikar Jr speaking at the event.

“So good to see someone breaking the shackles of slavery and telling people to realizes their worth,” wrote one user with the handle MissMcAdams.

“Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Jr was such a treat to watch and listen,” wrote another visitor to the march.

Many others praised him for his humility and the manner in which he conducted himself. Others found parallel with his famous grandfather, Pakistan’s first democratically elected prime minister.

Rahul Dev Rathore, whose profile suggests he is an educationist in Sindh, had only love for Zulfikar Jr.

There were those who pointed out that the young Bhutto was only able to speak at the platform, or any platform, because of the veneration and respect accorded to his family name.

He took the praise as well as the criticism in his stride, while winning more people over with his grace and humility.

“This would not have been possible had it not been for the space that trans women and the khwaja sara community have created for free expression in this country,” he wrote in response.
