Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of the Oscar-nominated Joyland as he formed a high-level committee to review the ban on Joyland.

The development was announced by Salman Sufi in a tweet stating that the committee will assess the complaints as well as merits to decide on its release in Pakistan.

Joyland, directed by Saim Sadiq, was originally set to release on November 18th, 2022, until Pakistan Censorship Board cancelled the release of Cannes Award Winner.

Before that Jamaat-e-Islami Senator Mushtaq Ahmed demanded a ban on the film on the basis of the subject. He said that the film tries to promote homosexuality and through such films, there is a plan to attack the social values of Pakistan.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, after receiving complaints against the film, an eight-member committee has been formed under the supervision of the Law Minister, which will include Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, PTA and PEMRA chairmen, Ministers for communications, investment, Ministry of information technology and adviser to the prime minister on Gilgit-Baltistan.

The film, which portrays the struggles of transgender persons, was to be Pakistan’s first official entry for the Oscars. However, for its eligibility for the nomination, it has to be released in the country a week before November 30.
