Rains, flooding in Pakistan claim 19 more lives; death toll reaches 1,186

The recent rains and floods claimed nineteen more lives in Pakistan while 1,256 people were injured during the last 24 hours, the National Disaster Management Authority said in its report on Thursday.

The NDMA said that 416 children, 244 women, and 526 men have died so far due to flooding since mid-June taking the total tally of deaths to 1,186, the report said and added that the numbers of injured reached 4,896.

The highest number of deaths was reported in Sindh with twelve more deaths during the past 24 hours taking the total tally of the province to 432. Balochistan’s total number of deaths reached 256 and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 26.

More than 33 million people have been affected by the floods, with at least 72 districts being declared disaster areas.

Hundreds of thousands of people are currently living without food, clean water, shelter and basic medicines.

The floods inundated agricultural land, destroying crops of cotton, rice, dates, tomatoes, chilli peppers and other vegetables.

In addition, more than 736,242 cattle have also been killed so far by the raging floods.

The water has damaged 736,242 while 436307 houses were swept away.

Food and vegetable prices in the country have skyrocketed after crops on thousands of hectares of land were lost in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Benazirabad district of Sindh reported five deaths during the past 24 hours while Sanghar, Dadu, Tando Allahyar, and Naushahro Feroze reported one death each.

Many districts in Sindh have been submerged by the floods, destroying crops and leaving many people homeless. the Sindh flood death toll has reached 432, with 182 children, 155 men and 74 women. 1,110 people have been injured in various accidents

Meanwhile, the flood victims in Larkana blocked the road and staged a protest near Wigan Road due to lack of aid. The agitated crowd yelled anti-administration chants and violently attacked motorcyclists and a rickshaw driver.

In Shahdadkot, three cuts were erected close to the Garhi Khairu road to reduce the pressure of flood waters cutting off land connectivity to numerous villages and Balochistan Dadu district has also been severely affected by the flood situation.

Thousands of victims have taken refuge in the relief camp of Hyderabad. The flood victims in Wahdat Colony are living in subpar conditions and demanding that the administration provide them classrooms in the schools being used for shelter.
