Petrol has gone up Rs30 in Pakistan, with a domino effect across different sectors. Protests broke out Thursday night in some cities with people burning tires on roads and vandalizing petrol pumps in Islamabad and Karachi.

As the price was announced at night, there was a rush on petrol pumps at 10pm. Petrol = Rs209.86 Diesel = Rs 204.15

The government last increased the prices on May 26. By Friday, Federal Finance Minister Miftah Ismail explained that the prices were going up as Pakistan was meeting IMF conditions, agreed upon during Imran Khan’s government. The price of oil has been going up in the global market as well.

In Lahore, the Public Transport Association has announced a further 20% increase in fares which comes to 40% in one week. Vehicles are being parked and staff will also be laid off due to rising costs, the spokesman said. People just are unable to afford public transport.

According to the All Pakistan Transporters Federation, the new fares have been implemented from Friday, despite passenger protests.

A few days ago, the government had increased the price of petroleum products by Rs30 per liter, after which the fares of public transport were increased by 30%.
