Just a few days after releasing “Tu Jhoom”, Coke Studio producer Zulfiqar Jabbar Khan (Xulfi) has found himself in the midst of a controversy, with a singer from Umerkot, Nirmala Maghani claiming she had sent the melody for the song to him back in June 2021, reported The Express Tribune.

Maghani further claimed that she cold messaged Xulfi, hoping to land a spot in Coke Studio’s season 14 and was not surprised when the producer and senior musician did not respond to her messages.

She did, however, insist that each message was received by the musician, as her Whatsapp messages showed the trademark blue ticks.

It was not until the release of "Tu Jhoom" that she realised that one of the melodies that she had sent to Xulfi was now the basis of the Abida Parveen and Naseebo Lal hit. Worst still, she had not been given any credit.

She told The Express Tribune during a phone call that she had been trying to get in touch with Xulfi ever since the song was released but he only responded with, “I didn’t download your audio file,” despite the blue ticks telling another story.

Culture curator, composer and lyricist Yousaf Salahuddin also popularly known as Mian Salli, also commented on a social media post, where Xulfi was seen reacting to Tu Jhoom’s composition.

“The composition has been copied from Nirmala Maghani, who is a singer and composer from Umerkot, Tharparkar, she had sent to Xulfi for consideration in the then-upcoming season of Coke Studio,” he commented.

Mian Salli is also a mentor of sorts to Maghani and finished the comment with, “Zulfiqar (Xulfi) instead changed the words and sold this as his own to Coke Studio. This is highly inappropriate and legal action will be taken very soon.”

He also said that there was proof on Whatsapp.

When reached for a comment, Mian Salli said he will stick to his words and that he had also received the composition long before it made its way to Xulfi’s Whatsapp.

Meanwhile Xulfi has denied Maghani’s claims and has said that he always tries to be inclusive in all his work while hoping to listen to the singer in person, while calling the young talent of Pakistan our future.

Even though the sample was posted to Maghani’s YouTube channel just yesterday, here are the links to the original song as well as the sample that was supposedly sent to Xulfi.
