The playing of Afghanistan’s national anthem was an emotional moment for Afghans in the stadium and online as it reminded them of the pain their country has witnessed over the years.

The rolling out of their flag in the stadium along with the playing of their anthem was especially moving given that both are not recognized by the Taliban government.

The Taliban took control of the country in August and there’s been much uncertainty about how they will rule.

Although the Taliban disapproves of public entertainment, cricket seems to be one exception.

And as the camera panned across the team during the playing of the anthem, Nabi’s tears moved people everywhere.

Independent MNA Mohsin Dawar used the opportunity to remind social media users of the suffering Afghans have endured at the hands of international powers.

But once the match against Scotland began, they played very well, beating beating Scotland for 60 in 10.2 overs to maintain Afghanistan's 100 per cent victory record against them in this format.

"This was our plan, to bat first and put a big score," Nabi said at the press conference.

Afghanistan's victory was also widely celebrated on Twitter and received a nod from Pakistan's Prime Minister as well.
