A Pakistan Air Force (PAF) plane has returned to Islamabad with 0.5 million doses of Sinopharm vaccine, gifted by China, to help Pakistan combat COVID-19.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on National Health Services Dr Faisal Sultan took to Twitter to share the news. In his tweet, SAPM said:

"Alhamdulilah the first batch of Sinopharm vaccine has arrived! Grateful to China and everyone who made this happen. NCOC & provinces played an instrumental role in tackling COVID. I salute our frontline healthcare workers for their efforts & they'll be the first to get vaccinated."

As per the details, vaccine doses will be unloaded in Islamabad and be preserved in the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) and National Disaster Management Authority's (NDMA) cold storage from where they will be transported to the provinces.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the country's nerve center for unified efforts against coronavirus, all necessary measures have been put in place for vaccine storage in Islamabad and its transfer to other federating units, particularly Sindh and Balochistan.

The nerve center has developed the National Immunisation Management System (NIMS) through which it will monitor the doses utilized in each province and district and how many more are required to ensure the new stocks are available before the existing ones run out.

The doses will be used to vaccinate frontline healthcare workers. According to data shared by the NCOC, Over 400,000 health professionals have applied for the vaccination.

After announcing an eight-step process for registration and vaccination earlier this week, the federal minister for planning and development on Sunday announced that the registration process of citizens over 65 years would start in the next 10 to 15 days.

The announcement came a day after SAPM on National Health Services Dr Faisal Sultan announced that Pakistan has successfully secured 17 million doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
