CJP convenes urgent full court meeting on judges’ letter

The meeting discusses taking the matter to full bench or SCJ

Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa convened a full court meeting of the Supreme Court judges over a letter sent to him by six Islamabad High Court judges.

In the letter, the judges have accused the country’s intelligence agencies of meddling with judicial affairs and pressuring the judges.

The full court meeting began at around 4pm on Wednesday lasted for over two hours until after 6pm.

Sources told Aaj News that the judges examined the letter and discussed taking the matter to a full court bench of the Supreme Court or the Supreme Judicial Council.

Earlier in the day, the attorney general met with the CJP over the issue.

The letter from Justice Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani, Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, Justice Babar Sattar, Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir, and Justice Rafat Imtiaz was received by the CJP Tuesday.

The contents of the letter included at least two appendices containing details of the letters sent to the Islamabad High Court chief justice by the same six judges.

The Peshawar High Court on Wednesday ruled in favour of the PMLN and other opposition parties in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province over the issue of reserved seats.

PTI-led government in KP was trying to block the oath of some of the opposition members elected on reserved seats. Consequently, PPP, PMLN and JUIF filed petitions with the PHC.

The PHC – which earlier this month dismissed PTI’s petition against the ECP decision to allot dozens of reserved seats to PMLN, JUIF, and PPP – granted the petitions by PPP and PMLN and JUIF in its short order.

The court told the speaker to administer the oath to the MPAs elected on reserved seats.

It said a detailed order would be issued later.

During the hearing on Wednesday, when Justice Attique Shah asked if the speaker was blocking the oath, a lawyer representing the speaker said it was not the case.

Justice Shakil Ahmed remarked that after the ECP had issued notification for the MPAs they deserved to be sworn in.
